LIGHTER THAN FICTION (2010) by Jenny Marketou (Greece/US)

LIGHTER THAN FICTION (2010) by Jenny Marketou (Greece/US)Presented by the Project Room for New Media at the Chelsea Art Museum

The Chelsea Art Museum, Home of the Miotte Foundation, and the Project Room for New Media are pleased to present Jenny Marketou: Lighter Than Fiction. What do you see when soaring over Los Alamos, New Mexico... utopia or dystopia? A landscape of natural beauty or a place where nature was unleashed in the creation of the nuclear bomb? Jenny Marketou’s video installation poses the question, juxtaposing dreamlike perspectives with disturbing realities. These contrasting states are experienced in three single channel video projections that comprise the installation.

In “Stolen Bubbles” 2010 Marketou has mixed visual and sonic material from Karel Zeman’s “The Stolen Airship” 1966 with her original animation that draws from the airborne balloon project called “Bubbles” 2009 - both filmed over Prague, Czech Republic.

Bubbles” is based on a public sculpture project where the artist created a remarkable set of 14-meter banners with her original graphic composition using the word “Fragile” which were draped onto an air balloon. Marketou filmed as she and her guests riding the balloon experienced breathtaking views of Prague and the dream-like sensation of floating with the wind currents, hovering above the busy pace and anxieties of city life.

Levels of Disturbance” (2009) is structured around the aerial audio and visual recordings that Marketou captured while flying in a small jet over the natural landscape around Los Alamos, New Mexico, where the atomic bomb was created in the 1940s, that is still contaminated by nuclear waste and turbulent human emotions. During editing Marketou destroyed the order of the video sequence and the coherence of the narrative, placing at the center of each frame a round sphere animated in a perpetual motion that controls and obstructs access to the full image of the landscape. The viewer is drawn into this unsettling spinning sensation, generating metaphors for the human condition.

Lighter Than Fiction” investigates the precarious balance between reality and fiction capturing the view from above where the lightness of utopian sensations and imagery are contrasted by dystopian realities.

Jenny Marketou was born in Athens, Greece and since 1984 has lived and worked in New York. Marketou has been awarded grants and artists residencies worldwide and holds a Master of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. She has lectured extensively and has taught as an adjunct professor Photography and Interdisciplinary Studio Art at The Cooper Union School of Art and Science in New York City. She is the author of the book “The Great Longing: The Greeks Immigrants of Astoria, Queens” Kedros Publishing. She has represented Greece at the Sao Paolo Biennial, Sao Paolo, Brazil and in Manifesta at Witte de With, Rotterdam.

Marketou’s recent exhibitions include: A solo show “Red Eyed Sky Walkers” (the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens, Greece); Le Grand Palais (Paris, France); Apex Art (New York, USA); Art in Odd Places (New York, USA); Fiacs 3rd Biennial International of Contemporary Art of Seville (Seville, Spain); Tina b Festival of Contemporary Art of Prague (Prague, Czech Republic); Pulse, International Art Fair (New York, USA); Anita Beckers Gallery (Frankfurt/Maine, Germany); ZKM, Media Center for Art and Technology (Karlsruhe, Germany); The Breeder Gallery (Athens, Greece); Museum Abteiberg (Moenchengladbach, Germany); Strozzina Center of Contemporary Art, La Fondacione Palazzo Strozzi (Florence, Italy); Kunstverein Ludwigshafen (Ludwigshafen Mannheim, Germany).

The Project Room for New Media is an incubator of new ideas, showcasing groundbreaking concepts in all art mediums, and the intersection of the arts through technology. Initiated in 2003 at Chelsea Art Museum by curator, Nina Colosi, over 350 international emerging and established artists have been presented in exhibitions, performing arts, symposiums, meet-the-artist programs, and workshops. The innovative public art project, Streaming Museum (streamingmuseum.org) was launched on January 29, 2008.

Lighter Than Fiction” is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council

Press conference: Monday 30th November, 11.00 am
Sala Bresciani Alvarez, palazzo Moroni, Padua

Words/billboards wants to be an annual, international, and site-specific project, in collaboration with APS advertising, APS Holding, and with the Padua’s Municipality patronage. The project was born in Prague in 2007 at TINA B festival of contemporary art, a unique artistic event organized every year in Prague by Vernon Gallery, presenting works of art from all over the world.
From 2009 TINA B and fondazione march collaborate in order to create a bridge between Prague and Padua, letting various projects travel from one city to the other.
Therefore Words/billboard schedules the invasion of the city of Padua and of the Czech capital with real art works based on the text and word, throughout posters of 3x6 metres.
fondazione march has chosen and invited Italian and International artists, who have conceived the billboards that will be affixed in public locations usually assigned to wall advertisings.
These locations become a kind of canvas where artists can do different interventions: such as messages, phases and declarations that face a huge range of themes, like the conception of art, of the citizen, of the urban space and that try to recall the attention of the people that pass by on social and cultural issues.
The intent is to invade the whole city area, from the centre to the residential and peripheral zones, and mix the artist’s billboards inside the normal and casual publicity affixation, by disorienting and at the same time creating a moment to reflect and meet the contemporary for the passer-by.
The project will develop during Christmas time, when we are usually overcrowded by advertisement messages: the posters intend to give life to new stimula and interesting reflections, able to subvert the normal billboards vision and function, usually utilized for commercial purposes.
The real users of the works will be citizens, tourists, curioses, and all who will rise their gaze attracted by the billboards.
The city will offer 15 artist posters that will go around in 5 different locations in Padua for 14 days, from the beginning of December until the end of January.
The involved artist are: Collettivo Raudì; Ettore Favini; Maddalena Fragnito; Kendell Geers; Jiřì Kovanda; Macinino; Vittorio Santoro; Tankboys for New York Memories; Kirsimaria E. Törönen-Ripatti; Barbara Rosenthal; Cesare Viel.

TINA B. FESTIVAL 2010

TINA B. FESTIVAL 2010
Main festival: 7. 10. – 24. 10. 2010
VIP WEEK: 7. 10. – 11. 10. 2010
Location: the historical centre of Prague
Nostic Palace, Ovocný trh Pedestrian Zone, Na Příkopech Pedestrian Zone,
Dělnická Alternative Space, Czech Centre Prague, Charles Bridge, Parkhotel

The fifth annual TINA B. Festival will be held in Prague from 7 to 24 October 2010. The theme of this year’s festival is ‘Solutions and Evolution’. Like last year, the festival will showcase art created using new methods and employing novel artistic techniques.

The festival presents art from almost all over the world. ‘NEW ERA’ was the central theme of the festival in 2009 and under that heading we introduced work from Israel, Switzerland, and the Near East. The TINA B. Festival 2009 brought art work by fifty different artists to Prague, exhibited in seven curatorial projects.

We are planning to show a similar volume of works in 2010. This time, however, we are going to focus mainly on art figures from Visegrad and Mediterranean countries (Turkey, Greece, Spain, and Southern Italy). We see these regions as cultural antipoles that are nonetheless both located in Europe. We feel that these geographic zones can serve as examples of entirely distinct perspectives of new lifestyles.

The curators in 2009 were very well-known theorists and artists: Blanca De La Torre Garcia, BBB Johannes Deimling, Paulina Kolczynska, Nina Colosi (with the Streaming Museum project), and Doron Rabina. The specific concept behind the TINA B. Festival 2010 will like last year evolve directly out of the selected centres of art. For this reason for the TINA B. Festival 2010 we are now engaging curators from Turkey, Italy, and the Visegrad region. One of them will be the Italian curator Daniel Capra, and Czech curators
will include, for instance, the special projects curator Darina Alster.

Part of the main festival programme is VIP week (7. 10. – 11. 10.) – a week of special events and visual performances during which there will be an opportunity for prominent collectors, journalists, curators, and regular visitors to meet up.

Some atypical indoor and outdoor venues have again been selected for the exhibitions. One of the festival sections takes visitors inside Nostic Palace. Daniel Gonzalez‘s project will literally dress up the statues on Charles Bridge in a special collection of fashionable attire. As always the festival has great potential for awakening a wider interest in art among the public in a way that the established galleries can never do.

This year will be specific in that after TINA B. in Prague the exhibited works will go on to be shown in two Italian cities, Vicenza and Venice, for the three weeks after 4. 11. 2010.
The TINA B. Festival maintains its visibility in various forms before and after the duration of the festival. In May, for example, it will be present at the Luxus festival in Venice, where it will show its specially designed MINICooper.

THE FESTIVAL THEME – SOLUTIONS AND EVOLUTION

In 2009 the TINA B. Festival conceptualised art as an agency that leads the individual and society to self-reflect and to ponder the direction of the modern world. With NEW ERA as its theme it looked at the future of our society and its artistic direction. The wish to describe and define the state of society in the 21st century spawned the theme for 2010.

The TINA B. Festival 2010 goes even further, progressing from the roots of problems through to their solutions. The theme for the festival’s fifth year revolves mainly around the word SOLUTIONS. We are asking artists about possible ways of mitigating the negative effects of the modern age on society today. We will look at the future from the perspective of efforts to create a better life. How can art improve our living standards – from interpersonal relations to current environmental problems? Today the artist is gradually coming to occupy a position different from that in the past. The artist is becoming a focal point of interest and therefore potentially a vehicle of change. It is therefore extremely important for the artist’s work to be reflective and leading in the right direction.

The TINA B. Festival 2010 will emphasise serious social issues, but will also present meaningful works of art that appeal to the public. The festival focuses on art in public spaces and on new artistic media like digital, mobile, and internet technologies used regularly in everyday life. This ranks the festival amongst the most important contemporary art events internationally.

THE SWISS ARTIST MARION RITZMANN’S LIVING ROOM OUTSIDE THE WALL OF THE PARKHOTEL!

MARION RITZMANN - LIVING ROOM AS PART OF THE TINA B. FESTIVAL 2009
PARKHOTEL PRAHA - exterior
The exhibition runs from 8 October to 25 October 2009

As part of the TINA B. Festival in 2009, the Swiss artist, Marion Ritzmann (1978), is exhibiting her unusual Living Room project, the first installation of which was in Basel. The installation, which contains furniture, an artificial plant, and a lamp, can be viewed on the outer wall of the Parkhotel. It is thus something to delight the eyes of every passer-by. The installation of 'Living Room' on the wall of the hotel brings many levels of significance.

" I arranged a living-room situation – usually only to be found within an interior context – mounted high up on the outside wall of the building. The function of the windows of the
building is inverted, instead of a view out into the exterior, a view into the interior is suggested. After sunset the lamp turns on and illuminates the whole setting.

Breaking with familiar habits of observing urban space, questioning how private and public space and their use are defined, as well as the absurdity of the scenario are the basic considerations for this piece.
Marion Ritzmann

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Parkhotel for its cooperation and willingness and courage to exhibit this installation.

The project has been prepared under the auspices of the City of Basel,
the Swiss Embassy, and with the support of PRO HELVETIA.

We warmly invite everyone to the pre-opening of this project in the courtyard of Herget Brickworks.

JENNY MARKETOU ( GR )
* 1954

Informed by and indebted to futurism and the utopian moments of popular culture, Marketou’s ‘BUBBLES’ epitomises the recycling of old forms and their transformation into the shapes of a new world. The project combines local utility features with the global economies of leisure and entertainment, all within the historical context and economy of disposable paper clothing, fully expressive of the sixties pop culture fashion in America and Europe.

‘BUBBLES’ appropriates and re-imagines the 9 metre diameter hot air commercial balloon used by Balloon Centrum in Prague for air tourist rides and attractions above the Vltava river and Charles bridge. Marketou transforms this object by
juxtaposing and adorning the ephemeral, fragile, and poetic hot air balloon with the repetition of the word FRAGILE written with big letters and inspired by Warhol’s paper dresses on which he silk screened the word as a performance in the 60’s. The subject of throwaway paper clothing engenders thoughts on recycling and research into the future replacement of paper in times of a shortage of resources. It is also significant that during times of uncertainty, such as today’s crisis, people can look to the sky and escape reality.

TINA B. 2009

TINA B. 2009

TINA B. – The Prague Contemporary Art Festival is an international contemporary art project, which strives to combine the creative energy of the cultural scene in Central and Eastern Europe with emerging talents and trends from around the world. TINA B. is held under the auspices and with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic and the City of Prague.

An acronym for “This Is Not Another Biennial”, TINA B. is also the personification of a fictitious character, the festival’s enigmatic female patron.

NEW ERA

The 4th annual Festival TINA B. will be held from October 8 till October 25 2009 and like the 2008 show will again present new and avante garde media. The premier event of the Festival will be a week of special performances and visual installations. The showcsase event of the Contemporary Art TINA B. Festival is the NEW ERA project which introduces visitors to art pieces from at least three selected countries. In 2008 Festival presented art pieces from Japan, Korea, USA and Italy. The 2009 festival highlights Israel, Switzerland and the Middle East. There will be approximately 50 artists displaying their art and also 7 curator projects.

BBB Johanes Deimling, Blanca De la Torre, Paulina Kolczynska, and Greyzone are the featured 2009 curators supported by TINA B.

The pivotal theme of TINA B. Festival 2009 is epitomized by the phrase NEW ERA. This conception underlines the festival´s determination to explore relations and connections between new experimental forms of artistic expression and the wider cultural and social conjunctions and contexts. The NEW ERA can be conceptualized by the fusion of ideas from our current period of seismic changes in society, nature, civilization as a consequence of human consciousness; creatively linking new modes of thinking. NEW ERA will take you by surprise by demonstrating a potenital future or, alternatively in a comletely unexpected fashion, by demonstrating a new kind of new progressive recycling of old forms and their transformations into the shapes of new world where revolution is proceeding not on the surface of the Earth but under the surface of substance itself.

The 2008 TINA B. show centered on the theme of involvement reflecting the unfortunate fatal period of the Czech history., The 2009 NEW ERA event sheds light on new aspects (perspectives) which were set in motion by the Velvet revolution in 1989. It deals not only with the topic of the overthrow of the past political regime and the return of freedom to the Czech Republic but also on a symbolic level exposes the new way of thinking and a new sensitivity connected with the possibilities of free movement, travelling, study abroad, praxis, etc.

The fourth year of TINA B. festival will shed light on the role of contemporary art and artistic activity regarded as a social-cultural component which is not only critical towards community ordering but above all it has a curative and positive effect as well. Festival TINA B. perceives art as a motive force bringing people back to a self reflective and contemplative state of mind over the direction of current world, whether on the local or global level, as a factor that strengthens the democratic society and its ability to face up the extreme political and societal phenomena; a pledge against an oppression of democratic principles and civil rights and as an indicator of a healthy society and culture at the same time.

Festival TINA B. ranks among the most prominent events introducing the contemporary art on the international scale for its focus on art in public spaces and new creative media as digital, mobile and internet technologies.
